If you’ve been told your child needs an autism or developmental diagnosis before you can get help, that’s changing. Here’s how Thriving Kids opens the door to support — without the diagnosis bottleneck.
No diagnosis is required to access Thriving Kids. A functional needs assessment — looking at what your child can and can’t do day-to-day — is all that’s needed. This is one of the biggest practical improvements over the NDIS, where the diagnostic process can take 12–24 months and cost thousands.
Right now, the Australian system has a cruel paradox: your child usually needs a diagnosis before they can get therapy. But the wait for an autism assessment in Melbourne can be 12 to 24 months. Private assessments cost $2,000–$3,000. Public assessments through CAMHS or paediatric clinics are heavily backlogged.
During those 12–24 months, your child is the same child they were when you first noticed something. They could be getting early support that genuinely changes their developmental trajectory. Instead, families wait, watch their child fall further behind, and feel powerless.
Thriving Kids removes this bottleneck. No diagnosis required. A functional needs assessment — which can happen in a single appointment — is all you need.
It’s a structured conversation and observation focused on what your child can and can’t do in real life. Not a medical test. Not a label.
A clinician (often a speech pathologist, OT or early childhood specialist) spends time with you and your child looking at:
The outcome isn’t a diagnosis. It’s a picture of what kind of support would actually help — and a matching plan of services.
A 2-year-old isn’t using many words. Under the old system: GP referral, paediatrician (3 month wait), psychology assessment (12 month wait), formal diagnosis, then NDIS application. Total wait: 18+ months. Under Thriving Kids: functional assessment, identified as benefiting from speech therapy, services begin within weeks.
Thriving Kids doesn’t prevent diagnosis — it just doesn’t require it. If during your child’s support journey it becomes clear that a formal diagnostic assessment would be valuable (for school accommodations, NDIS access for high needs, family understanding), we can refer you to a qualified diagnostician.
For many families, the diagnostic question becomes less urgent once their child is already getting good support.
Thriving Kids covers children aged 0–8. For children aged 9+, the picture is different:
That’s exactly what our free 15-minute chat is for. No commitment. No pressure. Just a conversation with someone who’s worked with hundreds of families like yours. We’ll help you decide what (if anything) to do next.
No diagnosis. No referral. No commitment. Just a conversation with someone who understands.
Yes. This is a confirmed feature of Thriving Kids, written into the program design by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. A functional needs assessment is the entry point — not a diagnostic label.
No. Functional needs assessments under Thriving Kids are funded by government and free to families.
Aim is days to weeks, not months. Once the rollout is established, we expect first appointments to be available within 2–4 weeks of initial inquiry.
You can pursue diagnosis through a paediatrician or psychologist at any time, separately from Thriving Kids. It just isn't a prerequisite for support.
